One of the best players of his generation, Robert Lewandowski has scored more than 700 career goals. ... [+] (Photo by Eric Alonso/Getty Images)Getty Images Even in his 20th year as a professional player, Robert Lewandowski starts the day excited to go to training.“Every morning when I’m waking up – and I hope it stays like this – I don’t feel any pain. And I still have the feeling that I love to go to the training session, to the club,” the FC Barcelona and Poland striker tells me in an exclusive interview.“My job is my love as well. So I’m doing what I love.”Lewandowski turned 36 in August, an age when most elite soccer players no longer play at the top level, or have retired from the sport.Judging by his start to this season, Lewandowski has no intention of slowing down. He has scored 19 in his first 17 appearances, including his 99th goal in the Champions League.Legacy and longevityFrom virtually the time he could walk, Lewandowski had a passion for soccer. He recalls a photo of himself, aged three and holding a ball: “I always say that the ball maybe chose me”.That young boy grew up to become one of the best players of his generation. Lewandowski has won numerous honors, including the German Bundesliga, with both Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich, a total of 10 times, as well as the Champions League and Spanish La Liga.He has scored hundreds of goals, has twice been the highest scorer across the European leagues and has given countless opposition defenders nightmares. He puts his longevity in the sport down to several factors, including his early training. Both Lewandowski’s parents were athletes — his father, Krzysztof, in judo, and mother, Iwona, in volleyball.Krzysztof, who drove Lewandowski an hour to and from soccer training after school, was also his P.E. teacher. He insisted his son try other sports as well as soccer, including judo and gymnastics.Lewandowski believes the flexibility and movements required from the different sports helped him prepare for a long soccer career.“To be on the top so many years, it sometimes not only depends on you. It also depends on what kind of people you had around when you were young,” he says.“At the time I didn’t know. But after so many years, I know that my parents helped me a lot. Also people I met along the way have helped me a lot. I try to take some advice from the people that know more than me.”Lewandowski won the German Bundesliga twice with Borussia Dortmund and eight times with Bayern ... [+] Munich.(Photo by Boris Streubel/Getty Images)Getty Images A discipline in diet is also important. Lewandowski’s wife, Anna Lewandowska, is a former karate champion turned nutritionist. Her advice has helped Lewandowski “learn my body” and make food choices to boost performance. Where once he would eat a bar of white chocolate to satisfy a craving, he now settles for a small amount of 95% dark chocolate.Proving the doubters wrongLike any

Support he receives from fans he meets and those on social media (he has 36.4 million followers on Instagram). But he tries to ignore the abuse, often from anonymous accounts, that can follow a bad result.“We are humans and humans try to find people who are stronger than us to put our weakness out to feel better. But they don’t think about the consequences of the people they’re doing that too,” he says.“I try to protect myself, to build some protection not only around me, but also around my family. Because mental health is also very important to me, not only as a football player, but also as a person.”Life beyond the soccer ‘bubble’Since he was “29, 30”, Lewandowski has been preparing for life after playing.“One day I will finish my career and I’m already ready and prepared for it. I know that my life will be changing, I will not be Robert Lewandowski the football player,” he says.“Everything I did as a football player, what I achieved, will stay with me. I will be in a different life, but still the same Robert Lewandowski.“It is important to be ready for this because we are living like in a little bubble. You have to be on time for the training session every day. Someone, for years, has prepared the plan for you.“If you are mentally prepared for being retired, that will not be a problem to start a new life, a different life. I don't want to say which one will be better. But I think my life after my (playing) career will also be beautiful.”That post-playing life will likely include more time on his portfolio of business investments.Lewandowski has interests in companies in several industries, from property development to logistics. They include Nines, a sports bar, and Stor9, a creative production agency. He is interested in biotechnology and is a co-owner of Bio-Lider, a Polish company that makes eco-friendly fertilizers for farming. The company is also starting to produce fertilizers for grass for golf courses and soccer fields.“I don’t have one way to invest money,” Lewandowski says.“More important for me is with who I invest the money.”Some investments are more focused on personal passions than others. He has ventured into padel, as a team owner for the Hexagon Cup competition.Lewandowski took up padel after moving to Barcelona in 2022 and often plays on his days off. Long popular in Spain, the sport is rapidly growing globally. Lewandowski’s friends in Poland tell him it is becoming hard there to find an available court.“Sometimes something tells me ‘I want to be in this business.’ Even if I don’t know too much about this business, I want to try to learn this business because it’s interesting,” he says.“Sometimes you have to see the future.”Philanthropy and passion projectsOther projects are about giving back.Lewandowski and Anna have been involved with several charitable causes focused on children, including the Make-A-Wish Foundation in Poland.Lewandowski was a player of 18 or 19 when he first visited children on. 20-year career, Lewandowski’s has not been without challenges.Aged 17, he came close to giving up soccer. Lewandowski had suffered a serious knee injury and was released from Legia Warsaw II, the reserve team of one of the biggest teams in Poland. It came a year after the death of his father following a long illness.“For a young boy that was very, very tough. It’s the time you want to speak about some subjects only with your father,” Lewandowski says.“I had the situation that I could have said ‘stop, it’s enough for me. I cannot do this anymore’. Because someone told me I would never come back to my form I showed before my injury.“I knew that maybe this decision was for the rest of my life. And after a few seconds, I knew I could not give up.”With encouragement from his mother, Lewandowski moved to a smaller club, Znicz Pruszków, in the Polish third division. He was fueled by a desire to prove wrong those who doubted him.“When you are young so many people try to advise you. You can listen to them, but in the end, you have to know what is best for yourself. You have to listen to what you have inside, your heart,” he says.“I had this and still I have this (ability) … I can put everything out, everyone out, be focused on myself and decide what I want and what will be best for me.”That mentality has had to stay strong as his career has progressed. With each successful season, the pressure and expectation — especially for a striker whose primary job is scoring goals — has only increased.“I know that I will deal with the pressure, with the expectation for the whole year and I cannot be afraid,” he says.“A few years ago, I started to take this expectation from another side — to give me more power and make me more motivated.“Of course, sometimes it’s tough. Of course, I am still working on this and how to be ready that the pressure and expectation doesn’t bring me down, but in a different way, brings me up.“It’s easier to be on the top.
