One program and walk off into the sunset.To my surprise, the very first version of Gritty Spanish was very well received, and it had a small cult following who swore by it.A couple of years later, I released the sequel, “Gritty Spanish Parte II”. If you’re new to Gritty Spanish, you might be thinking, “why were the first releases advanced materials?”. Remember when I said that initially the intent was to create audios and reading materials just for me? Back then, I was only thinking about people such as myself, those who knew enough Spanish to get by but wanted to take their Spanish to another level with lots of raw, edgy Spanish-learning content.After the release of Gritty Spanish Parte II, I knew that I had to create a version that was more intermediate, so I released Gritty Spanish Beginnings. Two years after that, I felt that Gritty Spanish Beginnings was probably too advanced for Beginners, and this is when I decided to come out with Gritty Spanish Basics.So it’s like I am going backwards, crazy huh? Honestly, I am not one of these Spanish-learning scholars who has been studying and teaching Spanish for years, but I am intimately familiar with the struggles one will have learning Spanish.I am as normal as they come, and I've gone through the process of starting at the very bottom. That was more like "real Spanish," where the Spanish speakers have that signature passion and spunk we see and hear in the streets all the time!Learn conversational Spanish in the real world.I wasn't getting enough exposure to this kind of Spanish in the real world, especially since Spanish-speaking natives in NYC didn't want to speak to me in Spanish, but I couldn't find such a program.The Gritty Spanish IdeaOne early morning at 4am, tossing and turning, I looked up at the ceiling and said, “You know what? I am going to write my own conversations, get someone to translate them all, and ask Spanish-speaking people in the neighborhood to come by and dramatically voice-act these short stories.”About 2 years prior to starting Gritty Spanish, I had worked with a Soca artist from my home country, Grenada. I also had the opportunity to work closely with the producers on a few small projects, so I had a great general idea of how songs were made. I never wanted to become a music producer or a musical artist, but I utilized what I had learned working with them to mix audios – Spanish-learning audios, that is!Gritty Spanish was only for meWhen I first came up with the concept, it was never meant to be a Spanish-learning resource for the public. My intention was to only create the transcripts, and the dialogues for my own use. The idea was to create something that would grab my attention and help improve my listening and reading comprehension.I never in my wildest dreams thought it would be what it is today! The first couple of episodes I did were very rough, but the more episodes I created I got better each time. If you are looking to learn grammar, verb conjugations, etc. you will not find this here. Instead, Gritty Spanish will help you fine tune your ear with Spanish conversations at real speed, with real expressions, from real native speakers.Positive:• Good variety of episodes• Episodes are not too long• Excellent audio quality• Expose you to a variety of accents• Side by side PDF transcripts• Slow audio versions are a great added valueThings to improve:• It would be great to have videos of the actors in the scenes• Some people may not feel comfortable with the use of swear words in the stories.• Exercises for each audio, for example, Cloze activities, vocabulary exercises, etc. would greatly improve Gritty Spanish• It would be nice to identify colloquial Spanish words or expressions (for example: tío, pepitos, más lento que una melaza, hecha y derecha) in the PDF transcripts to learn how they are translated to English.• This is a first step in helping people learn about the variety of Spanish accents that exist.
