Crunchbang is based on Ubuntu but focuses on “speed, style, and substance” to quote their website. Based on the lightweight open box window manager, Crunchbang certainly fast and could run well on your netbook. I highly suggest trying this out if traditional netbook operating systems don’t work out for you. It’s worth noting that in 2008, a group of EEE enthusiasts made a custom Crunchbang for EEE users: CrunchEEE. What's a Linux distribution ("distro")? A distro provides the user with a desktop environment, preloaded applications, and ways to update and maintain the system. Each distro makes different choices, deciding which open source projects to install and provides custom written programs. They can have different philosophies. Some distros are intended for desktop computers, some for servers without a graphical interface, and others for special uses. Because Linux is an open source operating system, combinations of software vary between Linux distros. This page was written with the help of a visitor who completed our distro form.Install and Configure CrunchBang Linux on
I (thought that I) needed to add a ppa repo to a crunchbang, (debian) install:(N.B. "raring" is the ubuntu version that matched the version of debian that I was using) so I did:sudo su -# you can call the file anything that you want, but it has to end with .list to be a valid for apt-getecho 'deb raring main'>> /etc/apt/sources.list.d/boot-repair.list# get the keys for that repo so that apt can verify the signed .deb fileswget add Release.gpg#gpg --search-keys 60D8DA0Bapt-get updateMost of this is explained on the boot-repair page, (though in the end testdisk and then Gparted were what I actually needed to restore a lost partition and a corrupted MBR.) This probably isn't The Debian way (TM) but it worked for me.Some debian repos are the "old style" and then you only need a line like:deb /# the trailing slash needs to be thereadd-apt-repository is good if you have it, but that seems to be more ubuntu.. Why do we love Linux? Because it is freaking awesome, right. Not only it’s open-source and free, meaning anyone can use it legally without paying to anyone, it’s also driven by millions of volunteers and Linux lovers so that any problem regarding any particular distribution can be easily solved by collective heads all over the globe.Linux has surely come a long way since its initial release in 1991, from only couple of distributions to more than hundreds of mainstream one’s. Now coming to the point, almost all of us have a spare old computer which we mostly avoid using due to its software compatibility issues. But with Linux there is always a way to use even the scantiest of computer system. There is an entire line of lightweight Linux distros that are specifically built to target old system. These distros consume considerably less amounts of memory and processor speeds and are highly cost effective. The one acceptable downside is that you won’t be getting those “eye candy” features in your old PC or laptop anymore.Table of Contents15. ConnochaetOS14. BunsunLabs13. Absolute Linux12. And just change the theme anyways and then it'll just be like every other distro. If you can pack something truly unique into it then sure do it. #8 04/17/12 6:10pm iHME Contributor [ + ] Registered: 08/24/11 Posts: 750 Re: Cyberpunk Linux Distro I have limited linux skills so I voted #2 instead of #1 (or sould it be voted #1 instead of #0). If there's any work on it the least I can do is test it on some older hardware I have lying around. #9 04/17/12 6:22pm xen0blade Contributor From: On the Net! Registered: 09/27/11 Posts: 62 Re: Cyberpunk Linux Distro I'll try to clarify my idea slightly. First of all, I think the biggest requirement of a Cyberpunk distro is portability, so it needs to run on a thumbdrive and be persistent. Second, I was considering basing it on a work of fiction. A while ago, (several years, at least) I was running Ubuntu and I had made a this "Ono-Sendai" usplash or bootsplash theme by cobbling together other works of art (colorblind, and NOT an artist). At some point I lost all of this, but that's sort of the vein of an idea I've come to. A system, not unlike ArchBang! (perhaps even based off of Archbang, although I think that Ubuntu/Crunchbang might be more stable) that runs completely off of a thumbdrive (not that it can't run on a hdd, but...). The distro contains multiple skins or themes that are easily self configured for maximum cybperunk. So it would have a (couple?) Neuromancer themes, GitS, etc., and they would be easily selectable through some sort of menu. Two different WM's would be available, one a full Desktop Environment (probably something like Gnome 2, but we could fight over that later) and a tiling WM. Perhaps even several different flavors of distro (one with gnome, one with kde, one with xmonad/awesome/openbox/whatever. I know this isn't exactly the most coherent post I've ever written, but it's just an idea in the budding stages. #10 04/17/12 8:55pm Hammerjak Contributor Registered: 08/29/11 Posts: 50 Re: Cyberpunk Linux Distro I would like to propose that the name of your distro be Ono-Sendai. I don't want to start another discussion about what is/isn't cyberpuink, but I'd say Gnome 3 and KDE 4 have a bit of a utopian feel. Everything's clean and shiny and simplified. When I think of a cyberpunk desktop I guess I imagine something like awesome/openbox with an extremely complicated conky script. And I mean like, needlessly complicated conky script.CrunchBang Linux Alternatives: 25 Linux Distros
This is the same problem I am having. I have the Asus U56E laptop with 6 gigs of memory, 750 gig hard drive and i5 processor (64-bit). Ubuntu, Linux Mint, Debian, Crunchbang doesn't make a difference. It will randomly reboot. NOTE: PCLinuxOS runs fine and I never experience this problem. It will stay up for days, weeks, and will not reboot unless I tell it to. If I put Ubuntu back on it, it might stay up 15 minutes, then it will randomly reboot. I have noticed that if I go away and come back later, the screensaver will have been activated (the screen is black) and after I move the mouse the screen comes to life and then almost immediately the laptop will reboot. If the laptop is on battery power, the laptop won't reboot it will just stay off. I will give anyone $50 bucks to solve this problem. I am 99% sure it is something in the distro(s) because, like I said, PCLinuxOS KDE/LXDE will run for days. $50 bucks!. CrunchBang is also known as CBPP or ! or CrunchBang Plus Plus. Screenfetch-cCurrent Version: 1.6 (release)screenfetch-c is an attempt to rewrite screenFetch, a popular shellscript that displays system information and an ASCII logo, in the Clanguage.Like the original screenFetch, screenfetch-c is meant to be compatible with a number of systems, including the BSDs, Solaris, GNU/Linux, OS X, and Windows.Installing screenfetch-cDependencies:screenfetch-c only relies on libraries that come on virtually every system. On Linux, OpenGL is used to detect the GPU. In most package managers, this is listed as libgl-dev.On Linux and Solaris, libX11 is required. In most package managers, this is listed as libX11-dev.Installing screenfetch-c is very simple:$ git clone cd screenfetch-c$ makeIf you want to disable colors you can run make COLORS=0 instead.Note: For Solaris, make must be GNU make. If it isn't, use gmake. Using regular (Sun) make will cause strange errors.Arch Linuxscreenfetch-c is availible on the AUROS Xscreenfetch-c is also available via Homebrew! To install it, just run the following:$ brew install woodruffw/screenfetch-c/screenfetch-cRemoval:Removing screenfetch-c is just as easy as installing it:If you installed it via Homebrew:$ brew rm screenfetch-c$ brew untap woodruffw/screenfetch-c # optionalContributingThere are a number of things that still need to be tested or completed in screenfetch-c.If you think that you can test/fix/improve one or more of them, feel free to fork and issue requests back to me.In particular, the following things still need to be done:Improve error checking and handling.Matching screencapture capabilities on Windows with OS X/Linux/BSD/SolarisImprove RAM/HDD detection on BSDFix manual mode on WindowsImprove features on AndroidImprove/replace configuration format and parserNotes on MinGWShell detection on the MinGW build is limited. You must set the SHELL environment variable manually if you're running screenfetch-c from command prompt or PowerShell. For command prompt that's set SHELL=cmd.exe and for PowerShell it's $env:SHELL = "PowerShell".You can also run screenfetch-c from a batch script@echo offset SHELL=cmd.exeecho.cmd /C screenfetch-c.exeecho.pauseor a PowerShell script$env:SHELL = "PowerShell"Write-Host ""Invoke-Expression -Command:"cmd /C screenfetch-c.exe"Write-Host "Press any key to continue ..."$x = $host.UI.RawUI.ReadKey("NoEcho,IncludeKeyDown")if you prefer to start it with a double click.Unlike PowerShell the Windows command prompt doesn't support ANSI colors by default. You can deactivate colors if you build with make COLORS=0.However there's a neat project called ANSICON which allows you to enable colors in command prompt by running screenfetch-c with cmd /C ansicon.exe screenfetch-c.exe.Current Known Compatibility:Note: These are only the ones that have actually been tested (so far). screenfetch-c may very well work on many of the untested distros, so feel free to try it. And powerful functionality with the bleeding edge software. The simplified approach to the Arch distribution means that even beginners can harness the power of the Arch repository and architecture to the fullest. The system hardware is automatically analyzed and the necessary drivers have downloaded accordingly. Having dedicated software and easy installation means that this free Lite operating system is a must-have.Download Link: Manjaro LinuxCrunchbang / CruncheeeThis one’s not exactly a netbook operating system per se, but it can make a pretty good one. Check out Cruncheee here, but know that it’s over a year out of date.Download Link: CrunchBang LinuxMoblin/MeeGoMoblin Linux is the light-weight Linux distribution Intel developed to run on low power netbooks with small screens and Intel Atom processors. The Meego is the lightweight Linux distribution that Nokia developed to run on its handheld internet tablets including the Nokia N900 and N810. Both of these operating systems are made way to Samsung’s Tizen OS.Download Link: Moblin | MeeGoEditors Note: There are few of the OS discontinued their support and further development. MP3s, for example, can’t be played until you install the codecs. EasyPeasy aims to be simple by offering proprietary applications and codecs out of the box. You’ll be pleased to find your favorites including Skype and Picasa included by default.Installing EasyPeasy is rather straightforward. Whether it is desktop or laptop, you can run this Android-based OS from USB or direct from PC hard disk. Instead of installing Remix OS direct on PC, you can boot from USB; there is an .exe file available to convert USB that can load Remix OS later. Remix OS is not limiting you to doing the PC activities; you can still browse the web, office applications, prepare presentations, Taskbar, File manager, etc. With Remix OS, you can enjoy all the Android Apps and wonderful

Working state:Active Desktop:Openbox Init Software:systemd Package Management:APT Release Model:Fixed Platforms:x86_64, i686 Home Page:www.crunchbangplusplus.org Developer:Crunchbangplusplus This article is part of our Big List of Active Linux Distros which is currently under development. This page was written with the help of a visitor who completed our distro form.
2025-04-07Why do we love Linux? ConnochaetOS is designed solely for the purpose of powering personal computers with much limited resources and since that’s the case, it is available for x86 (32 bit) only. It follows the KISS principle (Keep Things Simple, Stupid) and it’s 100% based on Salix OS and Slackware and follow their versioning scheme to keep the update process much simpler.14. 2025-04-02This is the same problem I am having. $50 bucks!
